We are very focused on energy conservation. This is the aspect of engineering that we find most rewarding. Coupling the energy conservation with practical and understandable systems that can be operated and maintained for the life of the facility is our goal. We designed the first Gold Rated LEED Elementary School in the US.
All energy conservation measures should be discussed and agreed upon with input from both the capital project group and the maintenance department. Failure to include both groups opens up the possibility of failure. Total buy-in coupled with good design is always a success.
We have utilized geothermal heat pumps, water loop heat pumps, chiller/boiler 4-pipe, high efficiency/condensing boilers, high efficiency water and air cooled chillers, energy recovery ventilators (ERV’s), dedicated outside air units (OAU), waterless urinals, low flow urinals and water closets, instantaneous gas and electric water heaters, improved insulation values, building orientation, glass, etc….
Third Creek Elementary School (first LEED Gold School in the U.S.), Goodwill Industries, Traders Row, Transylvania County Public Safety Facility, Watauga Humane Society, Rockingham Judicial Center (first LEED Gold Justice Center in the southeast), Fisher Street Theater, Goldsboro Union Station, High Point University and Piedmont Federal Savings and Loan Headquarters (LEED Silver). There are many others that were designed with the same philosophy/guideline but the Owner did not elect to pursue the documentation. We also have several others in the design phase.
